Understanding Readability: The Flesch-Kincaid Score

The Flesch-Kincaid readability tests are the most widely used readability formulas in the world, developed in 1975 by J. Peter Kincaid under contract to the U.S. Navy. They consist of two related scores: the Flesch Reading Ease score and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level.

Flesch Reading Ease

The Flesch Reading Ease score ranges from 0 to 100. Higher scores indicate easier readability:

Reading Ease = 206.835 − (1.015 × ASL) − (84.6 × ASW)

Where ASL = Average Sentence Length (words per sentence) and ASW = Average Syllables per Word.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level converts the Reading Ease score into a U.S. school grade level. For example, a score of 8.0 means the text should be understandable to an average 8th-grade student.

How Syllable Counting Works — And Why It Matters

Syllable count is a key input to readability formulas. A syllable is a unit of pronunciation that contains a vowel sound. For example, "read" has 1 syllable, "reading" has 2, and "readability" has 5. Words with more syllables are generally more complex and contribute to higher (more difficult) readability scores.

Syllable Counting Rules (Simplified)

  • Count the number of vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y) in a word
  • Silent 'e' at the end of words does not count as a syllable (e.g., "cake" = 1 syllable)
  • Two vowels together often form one syllable (e.g., "read" = 1 syllable), but not always (e.g., "create" = 2 syllables)
  • Words ending in "-le" after a consonant add a syllable (e.g., "table" = 2 syllables: ta-ble)

Average Word Length

Average word length is calculated by dividing the total number of characters (excluding spaces) by the total number of words. The typical range for English text is 4.5 to 5.5 characters per word. Shorter average word length generally correlates with easier readability — but not always. Technical writing often uses shorter words (like "API," "CPU," "SQL") that are nevertheless specialized.

Average Sentence Length

Average sentence length is one of the strongest predictors of readability. Research shows that:

  • 15–20 words per sentence: Optimal for general audiences and web content
  • 20–25 words per sentence: Acceptable for educated readers and business writing
  • 25–35 words per sentence: Becoming dense; mix in shorter sentences for variety
  • 35+ words per sentence: Difficult; readers may lose the thread before reaching the end

Variety matters more than the average. A paragraph with five 18-word sentences feels monotonous; a paragraph that alternates between 5-word and 25-word sentences feels dynamic and engaging.

Lexical Diversity: How Rich Is Your Vocabulary?

Lexical diversity measures the range of different words used in a text. It is calculated as the ratio of unique words to total words. A text with high lexical diversity uses many different words; a text with low lexical diversity repeats the same words frequently.
