How the Word Counter Works
TextTally is a pure client-side application. When you type or paste text into the text area, our JavaScript code immediately analyzes it in your browser. Here is exactly how each statistic is calculated:
- Words: The text is split by whitespace, and non-empty segments are counted as words.
- Characters (with spaces): The total length of the text string including spaces and punctuation.
- Characters (no spaces): The total length of the text string with all whitespace characters removed.
- Sentences: Counted by splitting on sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?).
- Paragraphs: Counted by splitting on double newline characters.
- Reading Time: Word count divided by 200 WPM (average adult reading speed).
- Speaking Time: Word count divided by 130 WPM (average conversational speaking speed).
Privacy-First Architecture
TextTally is designed to be completely private. Unlike online tools that send your text to servers for processing, TextTally runs entirely in your browser. This means:
- Your text never leaves your device
- No data is stored on our servers
- No cookies track your writing
- The tool works offline after the first load
- You can clear your saved text at any time
